METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
OUR MISSION
The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) exists to provide
efficient and reliable meteorological information by collecting,
processing, archiving and dissemination of meteorological information
to end users.
This brochure seeks to provide our clients and other stakeholders/clients
more information and to facilitate speedier or faster transaction
of business in a transparent manner. It is also designed to serve
as a guide and also to publicly demonstrate the department's commitment
to service delivery standards as stated in this document.
OUR RESPONSIBILITIES
We provide:
- Public weather forecast on daily basis (national weather)
on radio and television
- Collect, process, store and disseminate meteorological information
- Undertake collaborative work with Agricultural Agencies and
others on meteorological related matters and provide expert
advice
- Provide expert advice on wetlands including birds sanctuaries.
- Provide meteorological information to meet international set
standards
- Render other meteorological services on routine/requests.

SPECIALISED SERVICES
These are provided on the basis of a standing agreement between
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO)
1. CIVIL AVIATION
- Keeps meteorological watch -over the Flight Information Region
for the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority
- MSD provides information/warnings on approaching weather on
24 hourly basis.
- Weather report to Air Traffic Control (ATC) to aircraft on
half hourly basis
- 24-hourly Aerodrome Forecast. Terminal Aerodrome Forecast
(TAF) on 6-hourly basis.
- Aerial weather summary for rescue and search operations
- Initial meteorological training for Air Traffic Services (ATS).
- Pilot Briefing
2. COMMERCIAL AIRLINES
These services are proviced on the basis of a standing agreement
between ICAO, WMO and IATA.
- Flight documentation on En-Route weather for all Aircrafts
before any flight
- En-route weather conditions in flight. Eg. From Accra to London
- En-route wind direction/speed at flight level of aircraft
- Take-off and landing conditions
- Warnings of any hazardous weather conditions.
- Special Weather Report
- Pilot briefing
3. MILITARY AVIATION
These services are provided on agreement between the military
and the MSD
- Flight Documentation Forecast
- Take-off/landing conditions
- Briefing of trainee pilots and pilots
- Half-hourlyweather reports to Air Traffic Control (ATC)
- Special weather report
- Aerodrome forecast
- Weather warnings
- Briefing of Station Fire Services
- Meteorological for trainee pilot
4. SHIPPING
MSD renders these services to ships both on high seas and in
Port Operations on the basis of an agreement between MSD, WMO,
and the military.
- Six hourly maritime weather forcasts to Coast Radio Station
on weather warnings, sea surface temperatures and etc.
- Maritime weather to the Ghana Navy
5. VOLTA RIVER AUTHORITY(VRA)
Information/services provided on the basis of a standing agreement
between the two (2) organizations.
- Rainfall and Evaporation data for management of the hydro-electric
dams at Akosombo and Kpong.
- Seasonal forecast
- Consultancy Services
6. WATER RESEARCH INSTITUTE(WRI)
- 10 day rainfall bulletin to WRI as per agreement between
MSD and WRI
