What We Provide
The Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) Unit at the Ghana Meteorological Agency utilizes observational data, mathematical models, and computational methods to simulate atmospheric dynamics and deliver forecasts of upcoming weather conditions.
Currently, our unit utilizes regional models such as the Weather Research and Forecast Model (WRF) and the Wave Watch III Model. These models are indispensable for meteorologists, aiding in the comprehension, prediction, and dissemination of weather-related risks and consequences.
The services provided by NWP are essential for the functionality and decision-making processes of other divisions within the agency, including the Marine Unit and the Central Analysis and Forecast Office.

What We Do
Helicity
Helicity is a vertical wind shear that aids the development of rotating thunderstorms in the lower troposphere. Helicity maps enable forecasters to identify the probability of thunderstorms occurring by analyzing the distribution and magnitude of helicity across the area. …
Hourly Accumulated Rainfall
Rainfall maps help forecasters to identify the amount of rainfall, the occurrence of rainfall, and the impacts of rainfall/intensity
Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE)
Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) is the amount of energy available in the atmosphere to fuel the development of thunderstorms. Cape maps show forecasters, potential updraft intensity in storms, tied to increasing CAPE values, indicating atmospheric instability …
Potential Vorticity
Potential Vorticity describes the rotation of air parcels in the atmosphere. Potential vorticity map informs forecasters on the dynamics of the atmosphere, helps identify areas of potential weather development and strength of weather systems, and helps improve the accuracy…
Dew Point Temperature
Dew point temperature provides key information about atmospheric moisture levels. Dew point temperature maps assist forecasters in providing more accurate local weather forecasts. By understanding local moisture patterns, forecasters can better predict conditions such as f…
Temperature
Temperature provides critical information on the amount of heat available in the atmosphere. Temperature forecast maps help forecasters predict high and low temperatures which have a significant effect on key economic sectors such as public health, agriculture, tourism, an…
Relative Humidity
Relative Humidity helps forecasters determine how hot and humid the atmosphere feels using the combined effect of air temperature and humidity. It aids in heat index calculation and dew formation prediction thereby helping to identify its impacts on agriculture, health and…
Sea Level Pressure
Sea level pressure is the atmospheric pressure at sea level. It enables forecasters to predict weather fronts and atmospheric disturbances. It also helps to assess atmospheric stability and aids in marine forecasting by providing essential information on the pressure condit…
Wind Speed Forecast
Wind speed forecast is essential in tropical regions because it aids in renewable energy forecasting, detection of atmospheric disturbances and assessment of atmospheric dynamics thereby providing more information on its impact on aviation. it is an essential parameter use…
