From December 2 to December 6, 2024, engineers and technicians at the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) participated in a five-day, hands-on training session led by Eng. Mustafa Arman of Metek Meteorologische Messtechnik GMbH, Germany. The program, conducted at GMet's Instruments Lab, aimed to upgrade the skills and knowledge of the Engineering and Electronics Department staff to match the latest global trends in equipment maintenance, calibration, and software updates.

The training covered the operation of critical instruments such as the wind tunnel, pressure chamber, radiation test equipment, temperature test cabinet, and the COMBILOG software. Eng. Mustafa, who last visited GMet five years ago, expressed his excitement about returning to share his expertise. “It’s always a pleasure to work with such a dedicated team. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn, despite the language barrier, were remarkable,” he noted. Mustafa emphasized the importance of staying current with technological advancements to maintain the highest international standards in calibrations.

Participants had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, ask probing questions, and build confidence in operating and maintaining advanced equipment. Mustafa commended their commitment, adding, “I’m confident they are now equipped to handle calibrations with precision and professionalism. My support doesn’t end here—I’m always available to assist when needed.”

Collins Ansah-Daniels, head of the Instruments Division at GMet, expressed gratitude for the training. “This has been an invaluable experience for our team,” he said. “Eng. Mustafa’s expertise was exceptional, and despite communication challenges, he ensured we fully grasped the concepts. However, I believe such training sessions should occur more frequently—five years is too long a gap. Regular updates will keep us sharp and maintain our position as a reliable calibration hub.” He also encouraged other institutions requiring calibration services to collaborate with GMet, noting the dual benefits of skill enhancement and revenue generation for the agency.

The training concluded with renewed confidence in the agency’s ability to deliver world-class calibration services and maintain their equipment to exacting standards. With both trainers and participants voicing their satisfaction, the session underscored the value of continuous professional development in an ever-evolving technological landscape.

Such initiatives continue to bolster GMet’s commitment to excellence in weather and climate services, ensuring the agency remains a trusted leader in meteorological engineering across the region.
