Ghana Meteorological Agency Launches Maritime and Inland Water Safety Education in Mepe and Ada

Yesterday, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) began a five-day community engagement tour to educate fisherfolk in Mepe and Ada on maritime and inland water safety.
Led by Mr. Joseph Tetteh Portuphy, Deputy Director of Synoptic Meteorology and Forecasting, the GMet team conducted interactive sessions, demonstrations, and practical training on essential safety measures.
Fisherfolk from both communities actively participated in sessions covering:
- Weather forecasting and warning signs
- Safe navigation and emergency procedures
- Forecast verification
- One-on-one interviews
The fisherfolk expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, recognizing the importance of safety awareness in their daily lives, and requested more indigenous methods of forecast dissemination.
The GMet team committed to continuous support and monitoring to ensure the communities' newfound knowledge translates into lasting change.
The tour will continue for the next four days, with visits to additional towns along the Volta Lake. The agency is dedicated to empowering fisherfolk with vital knowledge to ensure their safety and well-being.
This initiative by the Ghana Meteorological Agency highlights its commitment to promoting maritime and inland water safety, reducing accidents, and fostering a culture of safety along Ghana's waterways.
