GMet Leads Validation of Early Warning for All (EW4All) Roadmap in Ghana

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), in collaboration with key stakeholders, has validated the roadmap for the Early Warning for All (EW4All) initiative in Ghana. The validation workshop, held on Wednesday, February 26th, 2025, in Accra, brought together national and international partners to finalize a strategic framework aimed at strengthening Ghana’s early warning systems for disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.

The roadmap provides a structured blueprint for fortifying a people-centric early warning system in Ghana through targeted actions and resource allocation. It also presents a set of recommended actions designed to prioritize investments in early warning systems and disaster risk reduction. By endorsing this roadmap, stakeholders reaffirm their commitment to building a resilient nation where every citizen has access to timely, reliable, and actionable weather, water, and climate information.

Speaking at the workshop, the Director-General of GMet, Dr. Eric Asuman emphasized the critical role of early warning systems in safeguarding lives and livelihoods. “Ghana’s vulnerability to extreme weather events—floods, prolonged dry spells, rising temperatures, and coastal erosion, demands that we establish robust forecasting and communication mechanisms. The rapid national implementation of the Common Alert Protocol (CAP) is crucial to ensure timely dissemination of early warnings, especially ahead of the upcoming rainy season,” he stated.

The Country Director for the World Food Programme (WFP), Mrs. Aurore Rusiga, stressed the need to move from warnings to action. “Early warnings must be matched with early actions. This roadmap must not remain a document; it should lead to coordinated, life-saving interventions across all sectors,” she urged.

UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Charles Abani, reiterated the importance of collaboration, saying, “An inclusive and robust early warning system is not just a necessity but a shared responsibility. With the right approach, Ghana can build a system that serves its citizens while integrating regional preparedness efforts.”

The validation of this roadmap follows the launch of the Early Warning for All (EW4All) initiative in October 2024. The launch marked Ghana’s commitment to ensuring that every citizen is protected from hazardous weather, water, and climate events by 2027. Following the launch, a two-day consultative workshop was held to identify gaps in the existing early warning systems. A technical team was subsequently constituted, with representatives from various national pillars led by the WFP, to develop the roadmap now being validated.

With this validation, GMet and its partners are poised to advance Ghana’s early warning systems, ensuring they meet global best practices while addressing the country’s unique challenges. The roadmap will serve as a guide for investment and implementation efforts, reinforcing Ghana’s resilience against climate-related hazards and disasters.
