GMet Begins Competency Training and Certification for Assistant Meteorologists

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), in collaboration with the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), has commenced a specialized competency training and certification programme for its assistant meteorologists. The two-week training, which started on Monday, April 7, 2025, is scheduled to end on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
The training is aimed at ensuring that GMet personnel meet international standards of excellence. It has been carefully designed to equip assistant meteorologists with the necessary knowledge, practical skills, and certification required to perform effectively and consistently at the highest professional level.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Director-General of GMet, Dr. Eric Asuman, expressed appreciation to the Danish Embassy and the Danish Meteorological Institute for their continued support. “I extend my appreciation to the Danish Embassy and the Danish Meteorological Institute for the strategic setup operations under whose auspices we have gathered here for this valuable training. As part of this collaboration, key initiatives such as the ongoing development of a climate advance framework are addressing existing gaps in our climate services, particularly in climate projections,” he said.
Dr. Asuman emphasized the broader impact of the workshop, stating, “This workshop is not just about competency; it’s about your professional growth and the continuous improvement of our services. The knowledge and skills you gain here should improve the accuracy of our weather forecasts and climate predictions, enhance our ability to provide timely warnings for extreme weather events, and support our ongoing digitalization and modernization agenda within the Agency. I encourage each of you to actively engage, learn, and take full advantage of this opportunity.”
This capacity-building initiative forms part of GMet’s long-term strategy to enhance service delivery, improve resilience to climate-related risks, and strengthen institutional readiness to respond to the growing demands of weather and climate information across various sectors of national development.
