GMet Bids Farewell to Danish Sector Counsellor, Kim Sarup, After Two Years of Productive Collaboration

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has held a brief send-off ceremony in honour of Mr. Kim Sarup, the Sector Counsellor on Meteorology and Climate at the Danish Embassy in Ghana, whose tenure in the country has come to an end.
The event, held at the Agency’s headquarters in Accra on Friday, was attended by GMet’s management team, including the Director-General, Dr. Eric Asuman; the Acting Deputy Director-General (Operations) and Project Owner for the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC), Dr. Ignatius Kweku Williams; and Mr. Harrison Ofori, Programme Coordinator for SSC - Statistics, Meteorology & Climate at the Danish Embassy.

In his address, Dr. Eric Asuman commended Mr. Sarup for his dedication and leadership under the SSC between Ghana and Denmark, a collaboration between GMet and the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) supported by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Your hard work, vision and commitment have greatly strengthened GMet’s climate services. Through your leadership, we have achieved several milestones, from DFC short courses and the Climate Atlas initiative to competency training for aeronautical forecasters, onboarding and change management programmes, and securing six master’s degree scholarships for staff under the Danida Fellowship.” He said.
He noted that the renewed SSC, launched in 2023, builds on a long-standing partnership that dates back to 1997, under the Ghana Environmental Resource Management Project.
“Kim quickly understood our system and adapted seamlessly. Today, we can proudly call you a Ghanaian even though you never quite mastered our local dishes,” adding that Mr. Sarup’s successor “has big shoes to fill.”

Dr. Ignatius Kweku Williams, the Acting Deputy Director-General and SSC Project Owner, praised Mr. Sarup’s collaborative approach and genuine interest in GMet’s progress.
“For someone who came from DMI, it often felt as though you had more interest in GMet’s growth than even that of DMI,” Dr. Williams said. “Your openness, your drive, and your commitment to initiatives like the Python training and the scholarships have made a real difference.”
He noted that Mr. Sarup’s tenure had been marked by trust, transparency, and teamwork, which strengthened the cooperation between the two institutions.

Taking his turn, Mr. Kim Sarup expressed his gratitude to GMet and the Danish Embassy team for their collaboration and hospitality throughout his stay in Ghana.
“It has truly been a pleasure and a highlight of my career to work here,” he said. “Ghana is a very good country, warm, welcoming, and full of wonderful people. It’s been both professionally rewarding and personally meaningful.”
Mr. Sarup revealed that he will be joining one of Denmark’s largest utility companies, where he will oversee climate adaptation and municipal collaboration projects. He noted that the new role could open future opportunities for knowledge exchange between Ghana and Denmark.

Mr. Harrison Ofori, Programme Coordinator for SSC on Statistics, Meteorology & Climate, described Mr. Sarup as a consultative and humble leader who valued teamwork.
“It’s not every project where someone’s departure is recognized this way, it shows Kim made a real impact. “One thing I’ve always admired, is his consultative leadership. Even though he was the boss, he never took decisions alone. He would always ask for my input, and if I disagreed, he often went with my opinion and later defended it, even when things didn’t go as planned. That, to me, is the mark of a good leader.”

The session ended with the presentation of a citation, a sash, and a selection of Ghanaian gifts to Mr. Sarup in appreciation of his service and friendship. Management members also shared words of encouragement and goodwill messages, wishing him success in his new role and future endeavours.
