As part of activities marking Meteorological Awareness Month (MAM) 2026, the Director-General of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), Dr. Eric Asuman, has paid a courtesy call on the Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, at the Bono Regional Coordinating Council in Sunyani.

He was accompanied by his Deputies, Dr. Ignatius Kweku Williams, Deputy Director-General for Operations, and Madam Vivian Abla Kally, Deputy Director-General for General Services.

The visit formed part of GMet’s nationwide stakeholder engagement efforts aimed at strengthening partnerships and deepening awareness of weather and climate services across all levels of governance.

Leading the delegation, Dr. Asuman emphasized the critical role of meteorological services in national development, noting that weather and climate information cuts across key sectors of the economy, including agriculture, aviation, disaster management, and infrastructure planning.

He explained that while the Agency continues to deliver essential scientific services, public awareness and visibility remain a challenge, hence the decision to expand the annual commemoration of World Meteorological Day into a month-long nationwide campaign.

“Our work is very critical and affects various sectors of the economy, but we realized that our visibility has been limited. That is why we have expanded the commemoration into a full month to bring our services closer to the people,” he stated.

Dr. Asuman highlighted that the campaign commenced with the launch of the 2026 Seasonal Forecast for Southern Ghana, which provides vital information on the onset and cessation of rains, as well as key advisories for the season.

He further introduced the Minister to the Ghana Climate Atlas, a forward-looking tool that provides long-term climate projections up to a century covering temperature trends, rainfall patterns, and sea level rise to support informed decision-making.

“The Climate Atlas allows us to take decisions today that will protect the future,” he noted, stressing the importance of integrating climate information into policy planning.

The Director-General also underscored the importance of engaging policymakers, describing them as key actors in mainstreaming weather and climate considerations into development planning. He appealed to the Minister to use his platform to amplify GMet’s messages and encourage the public to take weather forecasts seriously.

As part of the engagement, Dr. Asuman formally presented the Minister with a copy of the 2026 Seasonal Forecast for Southern Ghana, along with branded souvenirs from the Agency.

In his response, Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboa warmly welcomed the delegation and commended the Agency for its proactive outreach efforts, granting full support for all planned activities in the region.

Sharing a personal experience, the Minister recounted a recent flight to Sunyani where poor weather conditions nearly disrupted landing, highlighting the indispensable role of accurate meteorological information in aviation safety.

“There was a time we were approaching Sunyani, and the weather was so bad we couldn’t see anything. It was quite a tense moment. Your role is indeed very critical,” he said.

He further emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between GMet and key sectors, particularly agriculture, noting that institutions such as the Ministry of Food and Agriculture must work closely with the Agency to enhance planning and productivity.

He further called for closer collaboration between GMet and key sectors, particularly agriculture, and encouraged continued stakeholder engagement to improve public understanding and preparedness.

The engagement marks the beginning of a series of activities by the Ghana Meteorological Agency in the Bono Region as part of Meteorological Awareness Month 2026.
