GMet Commissions Automatic Weather Station at Achimota School

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), with support from Veriground Weather Networks, has commissioned an Automatic Weather Station at Achimota School under the Adopt-A-Weather Station Initiative, as part of activities marking this year’s National Meteorological Awareness Month (MAM).
The ceremony, held on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, also featured the inauguration of the Achimota School Climate Club to encourage students’ interest in weather, climate science, and environmental sustainability.
The newly installed Automatic Weather Station will support the collection of real-time weather data, including maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and wind direction. Four thermometers housed in a Stevenson Screen were also installed to support weather observation and learning activities within the school.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations at GMet, Dr. Ignatius Kweku Williams, emphasised the importance of expanding Ghana’s weather observation network to improve weather forecasting and climate services.
“Ghana needs more observation stations to strengthen our ability to predict the weather. Through the Adopt-A-Weather Station Initiative, we are inviting organisations and schools like Achimota to partner with us to support the installation and maintenance of these stations. Schools are ideal locations because they are centres of learning that nurture curious minds, and observing the weather today helps us gain the knowledge needed to protect lives and property tomorrow,” he said.
Country Representative of Veriground Weather Networks, Mr. John Sanders, said the partnership with GMet aims to ensure that students gain practical exposure to weather monitoring and climate data.
“Our goal is to install weather stations in key schools so students can interact with them, understand the data being generated, and see how weather information can be applied in their studies and everyday life for the benefit of the country,” he noted.
The commissioning of the weather station was performed by Deputy Director-General in charge of General Services at GMet, Mrs. Vivian Abla Kally.
In his closing remarks, Assistant Headmaster in charge of Administration at Achimota School, Mr. Kwabena Boateng, expressed appreciation to GMet and Veriground Weather Networks for selecting the school to benefit from the initiative.
“As a school, we are grateful for this opportunity, and we will ensure that the weather station is properly utilised for learning and observation,” he said.
The installation forms part of ongoing efforts by GMet and its partners to expand Ghana’s weather observation network while promoting climate awareness and education among young people.
