GMet Concludes Instructor Technical Workshop, Presents Developed Training Package to Management

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has concluded a five-day Instructor Technical Workshop with the presentation of a developed Basic Instructor Package for Meteorological Technicians (BIP-MT) and related training materials to Management.
The workshop, which began on 10th August 2026 and ended on 15th August 2026 at the Hill View Hotel, Abokobi, brought together selected personnel from the Agency, focused on developing standardized instructional materials to support the training, onboarding and competency development of meteorological personnel.
Presenting the team’s work to Management, the Team Lead, Deputy Director, Synoptic Meteorology and Forecasting, Mr.Joseph Tetteh Portuphy, said the team had developed lesson plans, teaching notes, practical exercises, case studies and peer-review records for the various modules.
He said the team had also proposed an onboarding package to familiarize newly recruited staff with the Agency’s work before they assume operational responsibilities. The team further proposed a competency pathway to support the progression of meteorological technicians and other personnel based on their training and qualifications.

The Deputy Director-General, Operations, Dr Ignatius Kweku Williams, commended the team for its commitment and said the exercise demonstrated the value of collaboration across the Agency. He urged participants to sustain the collaboration and use the knowledge gained to support further development of manuals, standard operating procedures and other institutional documents.
He also called for greater internal capacity to deliver training, noting that GMet should increasingly be able to develop and deliver its own training programmes rather than rely heavily on external institutions.

The Director-General of GMet, Dr Eric Asuman, said the workshop formed part of a broader effort to strengthen staff onboarding and competency development. He explained that the Agency had long recognized the need to better prepare newly recruited staff before deploying them to operational duties.
Dr Asuman also disclosed that GMet had begun preparations towards establishing a WMO-accredited Regional Training Centre (RTC) in Ghana, with the process expected to support the Agency’s ambition to provide training not only for its staff but also for professionals across the region.
He said the development of GMet’s own syllabuses, manuals and training materials was an important step towards building the capacity required to lead training in Ghana and beyond.

The workshop participants, in their reflections, described the exercise as an important step towards capturing institutional knowledge in standardized documents that could serve as common references for training and professional development within the Agency.
The workshop ended with the formal presentation of the developed training documents to Management, with the outputs expected to support GMet’s ongoing efforts to strengthen staff capacity, standardize training and improve the onboarding of personnel.
