GMet, DMI and Danish Embassy Engage MoCDTI on Digital Transformation Priorities

On Wednesday, 19 August 2026, a delegation from the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), and the Royal Danish Embassy in Ghana paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations (MoCDTI) to discuss digital transformation priorities and support for the modernisation of GMet’s technological infrastructure.

The meeting, held with Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the Agency’s digital capabilities and enhance its ability to deliver efficient and reliable meteorological services.

During the engagement, the delegation shared key outcomes from the recently completed IT Gap Analysis, which assessed GMet’s ICT systems and identified priority areas for improvement. Discussions focused on strengthening digital infrastructure, improving connectivity and data management systems, enhancing cybersecurity, and advancing the Agency’s broader digital transformation agenda.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Eric Asuman, Director-General of GMet, expressed appreciation to the Danish Meteorological Institute and the Royal Danish Embassy for their continued support throughout the various phases of the collaboration. He highlighted the importance of sustained partnerships in advancing the Agency’s modernisation efforts and appealed for support through relevant government digital initiatives, including opportunities that may exist under the Ghana Digital Acceleration Project (GEDAP), to help accelerate GMet’s digital transformation.

Marianne Thyrring, Director General of the Danish Meteorological Institute, thanked the Ministry for its engagement and support and emphasised the importance of continued collaboration as GMet works to strengthen its capacity to respond to the growing challenges posed by extreme weather events and climate change. She noted that improving GMet’s ICT infrastructure remains a critical component of these efforts and emphasised the need for strong institutional and political support to ensure the successful implementation of ongoing initiatives. She further described the partnership with GMet as productive and expressed optimism about continued cooperation in the years ahead.

Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the digitalisation of GMet and strengthening the technological systems required for the Agency to effectively deliver on its mandate. He noted that the Ministry and the Government of Ghana recognise the importance of modern digital infrastructure in supporting national development and resilience and are committed to addressing identified gaps within the government’s remit.

He also expressed appreciation to DMI, the Royal Danish Embassy in Ghana, and other partners for their continued support to GMet, assuring the delegation that the Ministry remains open to collaboration and committed to supporting the success of the partnership. He further indicated that the recommendations arising from the IT Gap Analysis had been well noted and would contribute to ongoing discussions on strengthening GMet’s digital capabilities.
