GMet Engages Students Through Climate Connect Initiative to Promote Weather and Climate Awareness

As part of activities marking the 2026 Meteorological Awareness Month, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), through its Climate Connect Initiative, engaged students of Pentecost Preparatory School and Accra Girls Senior High School in a climate and weather education outreach programme held on Wednesday, 18th March 2026 at Pentecost Preparatory School.
The engagement introduced students to meteorology as the scientific study of atmospheric phenomena and their influence on weather conditions. Facilitating the session, Mr. Richard Obeng explained climate as the average weather condition of a place over a long period, typically thirty years or more. He further emphasized temperature as a key element of weather, measured using a thermometer in degrees Celsius (°C).
Students were also introduced to essential meteorological instruments and their functions. These included the thermometer for measuring temperature, the anemometer for measuring wind speed, the Stevenson Screen used to house thermometers for accurate atmospheric temperature readings, the hygrometer for measuring relative humidity, and the barograph for recording atmospheric pressure.
The session further explored precipitation, with rainfall identified as the most common form experienced in Ghana. Students were also guided on cloud observation using the human eye and basic classification techniques, including cloud types such as cirrostratus, cumulonimbus, cumulus, and stratiform clouds.
The interactive nature of the programme encouraged active participation and sparked strong interest among the pupils, deepening their understanding of temperature and its critical role in weather patterns and broader climate studies. The engagement ultimately contributed to strengthening climate awareness and inspiring interest in meteorology among young learners.
