GMet, EPA Explore Partnership on Air Quality Forecasting to Strengthen Public Health Protection

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) are in talks to collaborate on a national air quality forecasting system aimed at protecting public health and improving environmental monitoring in Ghana.
In a meeting held on Tuesday, June 24 2025, a team from GMet, led by Senior Meteorologist Mr. Joshua Asamoah, presented a working demonstration of the proposed forecasting system. The presentation offered a glimpse into how the system will function when implemented, including how forecasts will be generated and used to inform the public and decision-makers about air quality conditions.
The proposed collaboration between GMet and EPA is centered on data sharing and validation. GMet will provide meteorological input and technical expertise, while EPA is expected to support the system with air quality data and policy alignment. This partnership is intended to enhance the credibility and utility of air quality information in Ghana.
Madam Esi Nana Nerquaye-Tetteh, Acting Deputy CEO of EPA, described the collaboration as both “timely and welcome,” noting that it aligns with EPA's ongoing efforts to complete and operationalize national air quality regulations.
According to both institutions, the joint initiative seeks to build a reliable framework for monitoring and forecasting air pollution, an increasingly urgent need in light of Ghana’s growing urbanization and industrial activity. When finalized, the system is expected to serve as a critical tool for early warning, public education, and long-term air quality management.
The collaboration marks a significant step forward in advancing environmental governance and safeguarding the health of Ghanaians.
