GMet Launches Green Climate Clubs in Akim Oda to Promote Climate Education Among Students

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), through its Green Climate Club initiative, has officially launched and formed climate clubs in three senior high schools in the Akim Oda Municipality. The launch, held on Friday, 4th July 2025, demonstrates GMet’s continued effort in promoting climate literacy and environmental stewardship among young people.

The beneficiary schools, Atweaman Senior High School, Akim Swedru Senior High School, and St. Francis Senior High/Technical School have now joined the national network of Green Climate Clubs, aimed at equipping students with knowledge and tools to address the impacts of climate change at the community level.

Mr. Joshua Aduamah, District Meteorological Officer of the Akim Oda Meteorological Office in delivering his welcome address emphasized the importance of climate consciousness, stating that “our survival and sustenance depend on the environment.” He also appealed for the initiative to be extended to basic schools, noting that early engagement is essential to building a climate-resilient generation.

Mr. Richmond Obeng, a member of the Green Climate Club Committee, delivered remarks on behalf of the Director-General of GMet, Dr. Eric Asuman. He reiterated the Agency’s commitment to youth engagement, highlighting that climate action must begin with education.

Retired Chief Technical Officer and former Acting Volta Regional Director of GMet, Mr. Peter Kofi Obeng, also addressed the students. He urged them to take the initiative seriously, warning that young people may be among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change if they are not adequately informed and prepared.

As part of the launch, each school received a customized pull-up banner to brand their Green Climate Club, training materials to support club activities and educational access to the Akim Oda Meteorological Office for hands-on learning and mentorship.

In a strategic move to ensure sustainability, each club elected its executives from SHS 1 students, allowing for long-term nurturing of the clubs’ leadership and continuity of activities.

The Green Climate Club initiative is a key component of GMet’s national agenda to foster climate awareness, prepare communities for climate-related risks, and build a network of young climate advocates who can support Ghana’s climate resilience efforts.
