GMet Strengthens Aeronautical Meteorological Capacity with Second Refresher Training
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has commenced the second batch of its Aeronautical Meteorological Refresher Training Programme, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining high standards in the provision of meteorological services to Ghana’s aviation sector.
The five day programme, which runs from 31 August to 4 September 2026, brings together GMet personnel from the Accra International Airport Meteorological Office and other airport meteorological offices across the country. The training provides an opportunity for participants to refresh their technical knowledge, exchange operational experiences and keep pace with emerging developments in aeronautical meteorology.
Opening the programme, the Director General of GMet, Dr. Eric Asuman, highlighted the critical role of meteorological information in supporting aviation safety and operational efficiency. He noted that accurate and timely weather information informs decisions relating to flight planning, routing, take off and landing, fuel management and aircraft operations.
Dr. Asuman stressed that the work of aeronautical meteorological personnel extends beyond producing weather reports, as their observations, forecasts and warnings form an important part of the aviation safety chain.
“Every observation we make, every forecast we issue and every warning we communicate contributes to a decision that may affect lives,” he stated.
He further noted that advances in observation technologies, numerical weather prediction, satellite applications, artificial intelligence, automation and communication systems are transforming the delivery of aeronautical meteorological services. He therefore encouraged participants to embrace continuous learning, innovation and professionalism.
The Director General urged participants to use the training to share operational experiences, discuss challenges and identify practical ways of improving service delivery. He also called on them to translate the knowledge gained into better forecasting, more accurate observations and stronger communication with aviation stakeholders.
The training is expected to strengthen the capacity of participating personnel and contribute to the continued improvement of aeronautical meteorological services at airports across Ghana.
