GMet Strengthens Objective Seasonal Forecasting Capacity Through AGRHYMET Partnership

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) on Friday, 13th February 2026 concluded a high-level Objective Seasonal Forecasting Workshop aimed at transitioning from consensus-based forecasting to a more scientific, objective forecasting approach.
The workshop, held at AH Hotel, brought together staff from the Research and Applied Meteorology Department, Central Analysis and Forecast Office, management and facilitators from AGRHYMET to strengthen Ghana’s capacity in objective seasonal forecasting, data processing, and programming for improved climate services delivery.
Regional Support and Recognition
Director of the Climate Department at AGRHYMET, Dr. Ali Abdou, commended participants for their commitment and technical growth throughout the training. He observed significant potential among the team and encouraged them to continue building expertise. He emphasized that objective forecasting requires continuous practice and innovation, noting that participants should not only use existing scripts but improve and adapt them to suit national needs.
Dr. Ali further indicated that AGRHYMET’s strategy is to build strong in-country expertise so that trained specialists can eventually support other countries in the region. He also acknowledged the growing collaboration between GMet and AGRHYMET, describing it as complementary and beneficial to regional climate service development.
Operational Improvements and Next Steps
Delivering remarks from the operational perspective, the Deputy Director-General, Operations, Dr. Ignatius Kweku Williams, described the workshop as a significant step forward in modernizing Ghana’s forecasting systems.
He noted that although there were minor logistical challenges during the training, including internet and infrastructure limitations, the progress made was encouraging. He assured participants that efforts are underway to improve infrastructure, including exploring cloud-based solutions to reduce dependence on local machines.
Dr. Williams urged participants to go beyond simply running scripts and to actively contribute to improving forecasting tools. He challenged them to innovate, adapt, and take ownership of the objective forecasting system.
Importantly, he announced that the institution will begin conducting monthly forecast reviews and updates, moving beyond static seasonal outlooks to more dynamic and responsive forecasting.
Strategic Vision and Institutional Commitment
In his final closing remarks, the Director General, Dr. Eric Asuman, formally closed the workshop and reaffirmed the institution’s strategic shift from consensus forecasting to objective forecasting.
He recounted that discussions to introduce objective forecasting began late last year but were delayed due to scheduling and resource constraints. Despite the delays, he expressed satisfaction that the workshop had finally been successfully implemented.
Dr. Asuman stressed that the objective forecasting approach would address critical user concerns, particularly regarding:
- Localized forecasting needs
- Early release of seasonal outlooks
- Greater scientific rigor in forecast generation
He encouraged participants to deepen their expertise to the point where Ghana can serve as a regional resource hub, supporting other countries through AGRHYMET’s regional framework.
He cited a previous example where a Ghanaian staff member became a regional resource person in flood management systems, noting that similar opportunities could arise for objective seasonal forecasting experts.
“Do not limit yourselves to using the tools as they are,” he advised. “Improve them, innovate, and become experts in your own right.”
Appreciation and Token of Gratitude
The Director General expressed appreciation to the AGRHYMET facilitators for responding on short notice and delivering intensive hands-on training. He also thanked staff for their commitment and sacrifices throughout the workshop.
A token of appreciation was presented to the AGRHYMET team in recognition of their partnership and technical support.
Looking Ahead
The workshop marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to modernize climate services delivery and strengthen evidence-based seasonal forecasting.
With continued collaboration between Ghana and AGRHYMET, the institution aims to enhance forecast accuracy, strengthen operational systems, and position itself as a key contributor to regional climate service development.
