GMet Takes Meteorological Awareness Campaign to the Streets of Accra

As part of activities marking Meteorological Awareness Month 2026, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) took its public education campaign to the streets of Accra on Friday 27th March, 2026 with a major outreach exercise from its Head Office to the busy commercial hub of Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
The street outreach formed part of efforts by the Agency to bring weather and climate information directly to the public and to increase awareness about the importance of using meteorological information in everyday decision-making.
Staff of the Agency engaged traders, drivers, pedestrians, and business operators along the route, educating them on key climate information released this year, including the Seasonal Forecast, the State of the Climate Report, and general weather safety information, particularly as the rainy season approaches.
The team also educated the public on flood preparedness, the importance of paying attention to weather warnings, and how weather and climate information can affect transportation, trading activities, construction, farming, and daily planning.
Many members of the public interacted with the team, asked questions, and shared their experiences with changing weather patterns, flooding, and extreme heat conditions in recent years. The engagement also gave the Agency the opportunity to educate the public on where and how to access official weather forecasts and updates.
The street outreach attracted significant public interest, with many people expressing appreciation for the initiative and noting that weather and climate information is often discussed on radio and television but rarely explained directly to the public at the community level.
Officials of the Agency explained that the outreach was part of a broader strategy to ensure that meteorological information does not remain only in offices, reports, and media discussions but reaches the ordinary citizen whose daily activities are affected by weather and climate conditions.
Meteorological Awareness Month is observed annually by the Ghana Meteorological Agency to promote public understanding of weather and climate services, strengthen partnerships with stakeholders, and encourage the use of meteorological information to protect lives and property and support national development.
The Accra street outreach is one of several public engagement activities being undertaken across the country as part of Meteorological Awareness Month 2026.
