GMet Trains Security Personnel Nationwide to Strengthen Security

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has begun a 5-day security training programme for its security personnel nationwide to strengthen the protection of staff, property and facilities across the Agency.
The opening ceremony was held on Monday, October 19, 2026, with the Director-General, Dr. Eric Asuman, urging personnel to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to improve security operations at their respective duty stations.
Dr. Asuman said the training was necessary to prepare personnel to respond effectively to security threats, citing previous thefts of air-conditioning units and car batteries at the Agency’s premises, as well as a recent incident involving some staff members and the police.
He stressed that the training should not be treated as a routine exercise but as an opportunity to improve performance and strengthen the Agency’s security system. He urged personnel to remain alert, stay at their assigned posts and prevent unauthorised access to GMet facilities.
The Director-General also highlighted the need to protect staff working at the Agency’s new building and other operational locations, particularly at night. He said management was taking steps to improve security through the clearing of overgrown areas and better lighting.
The training is being facilitated by instructors from the Ghana Military Police Training School, led by Chief Instructor Captain Kofi Osei-Wusu. The facilitators are expected to strengthen participants’ existing knowledge and equip them with practical skills in access control, perimeter security, asset protection and the safety of people within the Agency’s premises.
Captain Osei-Wusu said the programme was designed to improve the way security personnel carry out their duties and enhance their understanding of the various aspects of security.
The Deputy Director-General in charge of General Services, Ms. Vivian Abla Kally, also urged personnel to demonstrate professionalism, remain at their assigned posts and carry out their duties diligently. She disclosed that management was working to provide additional security equipment and posts at strategic locations to improve security coverage.
She further called on the facilitators to assess the Agency’s security strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and provide feedback to help management identify areas requiring improvement.
Other management members present at the opening included the Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations, Dr. Ignatius Kweku Williams; Deputy Director of Synoptic Meteorology and Forecasting, Mr. Joseph Tetteh Portuphy; Deputy Director of Research and Applied Meteorology, Mrs. Francisca Martey; Head of Human Resources, Mrs. Gifty Ofori Samor-Dua; Head of Finance, Mr. Richard Dogbo; and Head of Internal Audit, Mr. Kennedy Acheampong.
Dr. Asuman officially declared the training open, urging participants to engage actively with the facilitators and ensure that the knowledge gained translates into improved security and service delivery across the Agency.
