GMet Opens Leadership Training Programme in Accra to Strengthen Accountability and Performance

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has begun a leadership development programme for its Management and Unit Heads in Accra, aimed at improving institutional performance and preparing leaders for the increasing demands of meteorological services.
The three-day training, taking place from Monday, November 24 to Wednesday, November 26, 2025, is being facilitated by L’aine HR under the Ghana–Denmark Strategic Sector Cooperation. It is being held on the theme “Leading with Accountability, Collaboration, and Performance Excellence.” The sessions include practical simulations, film-based learning, and team activities designed to connect leadership concepts to real behaviour in crisis response, teamwork, and organisational decision-making.
In a welcome address, the Ag. Deputy Director-General (Operations), Dr. Ignatius Kweku Williams, thanked the Danish Embassy and the Danish Meteorological Institute for their continuous support. He noted that the partnership had already produced several important capacity-building programmes, including change management training. According to him, the new leadership programme represents another important step in strengthening GMet’s strategic direction.
“The purpose of this training is to improve our decision-making, communication, teamwork, and operational effectiveness. Strong leadership is the backbone of institutional performance, and this programme is meant to help us lead with clarity, confidence and purpose,” he said. He encouraged participants to fully engage in the activities, share their experiences, and take advantage of the opportunity for professional growth.

The Managing Director of L’aine HR, Mr. James Laar, in his address, described GMet’s mandate as crucial to the country’s development and public safety. “The mission of GMet is one of the most important in our nation to safeguard lives, support development, and provide accurate and timely weather information. In a time when climate risks are increasing, leadership at GMet is more important than ever. The decisions you make have a direct impact on aviation safety, disaster preparedness, food security, and public confidence. This programme is designed to support you as you continue driving GMet’s transformation”, he said.

The Director-General of GMet, Dr. Eric Asuman, spoke about the need for discipline, planning, and accountability among leaders of the Agency. He stated that GMet’s work influences national development and public safety, and therefore requires leadership that is deliberate, consistent, and results-oriented.
“Discipline is the foundation of effective leadership. Without it, even the best plans remain undone. We need discipline in time management, procedures, and ethical conduct. As senior staff, the habits we show become the habits our teams follow, and I believe we have more to work on”, he said.
He also stressed the importance of planning, monitoring, evaluation, and strong reporting practices. “Planning helps us set clear targets and use resources wisely. Monitoring and evaluation show us where we are succeeding and where we need to adjust. Report writing provides evidence of work done and supports decision-making,” he added.

Over the three days, participants will be taken through modules on accountability and integrity in leadership, building high-performance teams, performance management for results, strategic communication for leaders, and several practical and team-bonding activities.
The training is part of ongoing efforts to build GMet’s institutional capacity and strengthen leadership across the Agency.
